The Allen Institute for AI just dropped MolmoAct 2, an open robotics model that reasons in 3D before acting. That's not a typo—it literally builds an internal 3D understanding of the world, then decides what move to make. Most robots out there are basically fancy if-then statements. MolmoAct 2 actually thinks first. And unlike the rest of the robotics world hoarding their models like trade secrets, Ai2 released the whole thing open—weights, training data, code, the works. That's the same Allen Institute that built OLMo, their fully open language model, and they've been making waves in the "open AI" space for years. Based in Seattle, and if you're in robotics research, this is probably the most interesting thing to play with this year.
