Our Take
HelixDB is an open-source OLTP graph-vector database built in Rust—which is kind of a big deal if you care about database performance. Graph databases handle relationships like social networks and recommendations beautifully. Vector databases are the backbone of AI apps searching for similarity and embeddings. Most teams run two separate systems for this. HelixDB said why not do both in one? And they built it in Rust because when you're processing millions of relationships and vectors in real-time, you need something faster than memory-safe-but-slow languages.
OLTP stands for Online Transaction Processing, meaning this isn't some batch-analyze-once-a-night system—it handles real-time queries at scale. The combination of graph + vector in a single OLTP engine is rare. If you're building AI agents, recommendation engines, or fraud detection systems that need to query relationships AND semantic similarity simultaneously, you either stitch together Neo4j plus Pinecone plus a traditional DB—or you just use HelixDB and move faster. Open-source means you can self-host, customize, and avoid vendor lock-in. That's the play.
